Racial Disparities in Mortgage Lending: The Example of Urban Ohio
Brian Coffey and J. Clarke Gocker remind us that race still matters and that there is an urgent need to revitalize the national struggle for social justice. Despite the perception of many lenders, increased investment in poor areas will result in greater development and, ultimately, in more future lending opportunities. What is needed now is increased scrutiny and a greater willingness on the part of government to take action against creditors who avoid minority applicants and who eschew investments in poor neighborhoods.
