Shelden’s essay indicates that Social Darwinism is alive as an explanation for social failure. It discusses neoeugenics-based explanations for the criminal conduct of racial minorities and the poor, many of whom seem to be “predisposed to violence.” Major pharmaceutical companies fund much of the research seeking a biological link to crime. Research scientists eagerly spend that money (especially with diminishing federal research grant support).
