Georg Rusche and Otto Kirchheimer: Punishment and Social Structure

Melossi’s review essay of Rusche and Kirchheimer’s Punishment and Social Structure (1978) indicates that Kirchheimer, rather than pursuing the Rusche thesis in the remaining chapters of the book, “widened” and possibly undermined Rusche’s thesis in his analysis of developments in penal policy under fascist rule. Thus, the “double writing” of the book generated a number of problems.
