Understanding the Roots of Latina Migrants’ Captivity

The goal of this essay is to challenge the dominant belief that the contemporary anti-migrant moment is exceptional. A relational analysis of the criminalization of Black and Latina motherhoods is provided. The analysis links the policing, incarceration, detention, and family separation that migrants confront to expansion of the U.S. prison regime. The author maintains that targeting women’s reproduction is a fundamental characteristic of imprisonment and their containment is correlated with the racialized organization of labor relations within global neoliberalism.
