The U.S.-Mexico Border: A Strategy of Low-Intensity Conflict

The highly militarized US-Mexico border keeps workers available for low-paid maquiladora production in Mexico although the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed by the United States, Mexico, and Canada has reduced the impact of borders for the movement of goods. Where countries of the North and South do not share a land border, immigration policies in countries of the North are closely linked to the labor needs of corporations, with work permits available for those with appropriate education and skills.
